WHO ARE WE?

Established in 1992, Hope House served 80,246 (up 5,307 from 2005). The hungry and homeless of the inner-city Utica area have come to rely upon at least one daily meal at Hope House. We have also provided countless hours of safe haven from the streets for the people who are our guests, many of whom feel that they come to Hope House to be with "Family". In many instances, we constitue their only stable and caring environment.

Local students make home made ice cream with young guests of Hope House.

On August 16th and 17th student volunteers from Hamilton College partnered with youngsters who had come to Hope House for their lunch meal on those days. These partnerships resulted in the making of dessert that took the form of ice cream. How did they do that? Well, one needs the ingredients for ice cream, some rock salt and two zip lock bags, one larger than the other. The salt in put in the larger bag, the ingredients in the smaller. Once the small bag is sealed TIGHTLY, it is enclosed in the bigger one with the rock salt. The filled bags are then tossed back and forth between two people until the ice cream forms and freezes (about five minutes). Once the bags have been carefully opened, the ice cream can be enjoyed right from the smaller bag. Thanks to a generous donor, lots of toppings and sprinkles were available for the youngsters to use to add to their ice cream. Great fun was had by all who participated - and everybody involved learned that nutritional food can be created in some very simple and inexpensive ways.

Gleaning Award: Each month we will recognize a local business that has donated items to help us feed the hungry. In August, we're honoring Manny's Cheesecakes who have been so generous in donating some of their pastries which give our guests an occasional treat when they visit Hope House.

Building Project Update

We are thrilled to announce that we are Halfway! Your help has been vital to our haing been able to achieve this milestone! But...we still have to go the other half!

Why is the new building so important? Here are just a few reasons. First, we MUST get all of our operation onto a single level. Our volunteers just cannot keep toting cartons and crates up and down between the attic and basement. Our storage is currently inadequate and offices are crammed. We have no meeting place for educational programs or recreational activities. There is no 'volunteers room' where volunteers an take a brief break - those breaks are especially needed on our busy days. The new building would also tremendously lower our utility costs and be more energy efficient. If you could contribute $25 towards this project, think how much that would help. If all our readers contributed that would generate $90,000. Please clearly mark you gift as being for the Building Fund.
